We love the leaderboard functionality, allowing you to peg yourself against other riders who do the same routes as you, which are broken up into “segments”. Honestly, we use it for running, swimming, and cycling and it performs very well. That is not to say it doesn’t also do a great job for runners, but cycling is where it got its first traction, and where it is a dominant app today. We wanted to look at the four apps that we hear the most buzz about and compare them head-to-head for both running and cycling. It is a gamechanger, especially for those who are motivated by social pressure and a competitive drive. Granted, that was a huge leap forward from where we were before then, but nowadays you can be even more precise and connected.

Gone are the days when you would put on your Garmin watch and just track your mileage and speed.

And with the integration of Foursquare showing where you have been is an excellent addition of tracking where and what you did all day.Running and cycling apps take workout precision to a whole new level, while adding the element of community. It is hands down the best app for general step and activity tracking. Not sure about the other sports trackers. Endo lets you do this one at a time, and Runkeeper lets you do a bulk export. I think the Nike app is great for beginners, but having all your data locked into there ecosystem tends to frustrate people when they decide to get more serious with their tracking and decide to move into a more dedicated sports tracker and find out they can not export their data. I paid for the Elite subscription ($19.99) because of one feature alone. The ability for my wife to see me run and cheer/comment me on the course through the app on her iPhone as I am running about I switched to Runkeeper when I moved to the UK from the US because I started doing more Half Marathons as running is more active over here.

I don't mind paying for these services, but I don't like on principle of removing features from a PRO edition to sway me to pay to get them back. Also they started removing features that were part of a PRO feature and started making them Premium features that is part of their new paid subscription service. Endomondo started bringing too much spam into their news feed feature. I used Endomondo for a very long time, but recently changed over to Runkeeper.
